Trip to Europe: Lessons learnt and opportunities for YIDEZ |
|
With the ever changing political space and climate in Zimbabwe and with key electoral events lined up in the next 12 months, Trocaire nominated me to go and represent Zimbabwe’s civil society at a platform organised by The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Critical to Trocaire’s work in Zimbabwe is to ensure that the international community as well as the donor community understands Trocaire’s operating environment through the organisations that it works with. Accompanied by that process, Zimbabwe was under an EU microscope on restrictive measures imposed by the EU. With 27 countries forming the EU block, certain member states have begun to seek for change of approach on the measures debate calling for their uplifting. Because the debate was going on whilst I was in Europe, Zimbabwe Europe Network (http://www.zimbabweeurope.org/node/1), invited me to do some advocacy work with different EU member states in particular their Zimbabwean desks. |

During the lecture, an annual award is also presented to an outstanding young woman as a means of celebrating the current work being done by young women to continue the work that was done by Gertrude. This year, the lecture was held in Bulawayo on 10 March 2012 under the theme “Beyond the Transition: Women fighting for Democracy”. |
